The First Domesticated Dog?

While the exact details are fuzzy, the first domesticated dog likely resembled a grey wolf, but friendlier.  Imagine a less wary pup, perhaps with floppy ears or a shorter snout, hanging around human settlements for scraps.  This early canine companion, through generations of selective breeding and co-evolution, eventually blossomed into the beloved dog we know today.

Artemis, the Greek goddess, embodied wilderness and independence.  Imagine a young huntress, forever youthful, clad in a hunter’s tunic and armed with a golden bow and quiver.  She roamed wild places, accompanied by a pack of hunting dogs and a band of nymphs.  While fierce and protective of the wild, Artemis also held dominion over childbirth and the protection of young girls. Often linked to the moon, she symbolized new beginnings and the untamed spirit.

Hecate, a Greek goddess associated with magic, witchcraft, guardian against evil spirits and the protector of travelers at the crossroads. She is sometimes depicted with three heads, including that of a dog. She was often accompanied by dogs in her role as a guardian of the underworld.

In ancient Khem (Egyptian) funerary rites, Auset (Isis) and Anubis played key roles in ensuring the deceased reached the afterlife.

Anubis, the jackal-headed god, presided over the embalming process. He was believed to be the divine embalmer, preparing the body for preservation and transformation into a mummy.

Auset (Isis), goddess of magic and protection, along with her sister Nephthys, mourned and protected the deceased. They were often depicted on coffins or in tombs, symbolizing their watchful presence. The myth of Isis reviving her murdered husband, Ausar (Osiris), became a powerful symbol of hope for resurrection in the afterlife.

Together, Anubis and Isis represented different but crucial aspects of the journey to the next life. Anubis facilitated the physical transformation, while Isis offered spiritual guidance and hope for rebirth.

Saint Christopher, in some lesser-known depictions, wasn’t the usual gentle giant. This unusual version portrays him as a “Cynocephaly,” a human-like being with the head of a dog. Often depicted as a warrior from a faraway land, Saint Christopher the Cynocephaly was said to be enormous and fierce.  This portrayal reflects a medieval belief in dog-headed people and a possible mistranslation of his origin.  Despite his unusual appearance, the core story remains: a giant seeking purpose who finds redemption by serving others, eventually becoming the patron saint of travelers.
